The ACEO drought has broken

It's been a long, long, long time since I've had an original ACEO for sale.

So it's nice to see two new originals in my Etsy shop.

There's Batgirl:

And Carrie:

Both are available in my Etsy shop.

And hopefully they'll have some more original ACEO friends soon. :)

New shoes

Just a quickie.

After watching Mission Impossible III tonight, I sat down and created a couple of new Keds shoes in my (small but growing) shoe shop.

So these should appear on the site sometime tomorrow.

Tea-bird - with a tea-cup bird on the heel.

And Rosie - I really like the flowers around the base. (In fact I may be ordering a pair of these myself next year!)

Something old. Something new.

Nope, not getting married. Just getting organised.

It's taken me weeks to get a decent scan of my final piece for the group show that's been and gone and is all but forgotten! I was in the throes of a mild obsession with chickens (ever seen the book Extraordinary Chickens?) when I illustrated Fox:

So now that's out of the way, I can focus on Christmas.

I've been toying with an idea about using candy canes in a different way. Slightly cabaret. Slightly burlesque.

By the same token, I'm cautious about being too blatantly risque with a Christmas card image as this may not be the merry message everyone wants to send!

So 'Candy' may be sexy, but she's also keeping herself nice:

I've popped her in my Etsy shop as a single card, pack of 5 and pack of 10.

Have a great weekend!

Almost done

Amazingly, it seems to be under control.

I bought frames this evening and am furiously - ahem, I mean carefully and elegantly - framing my art for next week.

Here's the latest piece for the show. She's still untitled, so I'll have to think fast over the weekend.

I'd JUST finished her off (at work) and was getting a photocopy for my moleskine/mini art folio when my boss walked in on me....and bought her!

As stoked as I was, there was a moment of blind panic when I thought I'd have to put together a replacement piece overnight. Instead I'll put her in as planned and just have her priced as 'sold'.

Too tired to draw any more. Must watch Project Runway and go to bed.

Flowers

It's amazing how much better things look when you spend a bit of time on them. (Yeah, yeah, I know - I should have figured that one out years ago.)

I usually spend ages on the face and not so much time on the details. But instead of rushing my way through this drawing, I took the time to get the flowers right. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the process - and it's make a huge difference to the piece.

OK, lesson learnt. No more skimping on the details. Cross my heart.

PS. She's still a work in process, but not too far to go now.

Yay! New ACEOs

My original ACEOs tend to sell fairly quickly, so I'm always excited to have a new batch in store. It so much nicer to see that section with a few things in it instead of totally empty!

Here's what I've been working on over the last few days:

Capricorn (pencil and ink on card) - seemed appropriate as I am one.

Firelashes (pencil and ink on card)

Snake Charmer (pencil and ink on card) - quite a different style to my usual girls.

I'm also working on some small gouache paintings on watercolour paper. Hopefully they'll be ready to post soon. (I've learnt the hard way not to try to scan them until they're 100% dry!)

Juxtapoz

Juxtapoz is THE lowbrow magazine. It's where I've discovered all my favourite artists, so I'm stoked to have finally got some work into the reader art section of their site.

More pics from 'We Love Ladies'

So I didn't make it to my first group show, 'We Love Ladies' at 696

So I've been desperately waiting to get my hands on some pics from the night. And I've finally found some.

Here's how it all looked.

'The Yard' at 696

The three on the grey wall (top left) were mine (hard to see from here, I know).

looks like fun, huh?

The bright ones on the left are by Ali J and the pencil on white images in the black frames are by Bec Winnel.

One the left, Nom Kinnear-King. One the right, Samara

The four smaller ones in the middle are Ali J's

Now I really wish I'd been there!

Something for me

Since opening my Etsy shop every piece of work I create ends up for sale. So when I stumbled across this amazing frame I decided it's time to draw something for myself again.

My studio is an incredible messy treasure trove of paper and odds and ends, so I rumaged around until I found a huge A2 sheet of grey/green stock and grabbed my pencil case.

I think her name is Lottie (no idea what her little friend's name is yet) and I've used my favourite green for her eyeshadow and flower. I can't wait to see what she looks like once she's done.

A bit further along...

She's done - not sure if I love her though. Rats.

Hooray for holidays!

Toothbrush? Check. Plane tickets? Check. Pencil case? Check.

I seem to draw twice as much when I'm on holidays. My first piece - Bluebell - started in our Brisbane hotel room which overlooked the pool (perhaps that's why her hair's such a fabulous watery blue!).

I draw these pieces straight onto the cardboard with very little planning - it just happens as it happens - although in this case there was a little (very little!) inspiration from an image of Kirsten Dunst with that upward glance that I've used. I adore using images I find in fashion magazines as a rough basis and then mixing and matching expressions and clothing styles.

After Brisbane, we headed up to Sunshine Beach. The weather was superb so it's no surprise that everything I drew had a happy glow to it! These are the next four I'll be listing in my Etsy shop over the next couple of weeks.

Now I'm frantically saving up as Hawaii is the goal for next year!

Aloha.
