You have GOT to see Del Kathryn Barton's work in the flesh to really appreciate it. I mean, I've always liked her art, but I wasn't expecting such huge pieces with such incredible detail. Astounding.
Take the piece above for example, 'or make myself a space to inhabit'.
See the background on the right? Near the lily pad where it almost looks like the ripply surface of water when you blow across it. That's make up of thousands and thousands of tiny, perfect dots of paint. Some are darker and some are lighter, making that rippling effect. And that's just the background.
You can't even begin to imagine how detailed this is in reality.
Here are some more of her pieces. But, as I said earlier, if you're in Melbourne, don't even bother looking at them here. It comes nowhere close to doing them justice.

That red line at the very top is actually sewn on red buttons. There are blue ones down the left hand side too. The actual piece is 2.5m high. Just incredible to stand in front of.
No wonder she's just won the Archibald Prize.
